An Update on Food PDF Print E-mail

Hello CUC participants,

A very small number of people have been voicing some rather bold opinions and assertions regarding the CUC2008 field food situation and I’d like to take a moment to fill everyone in on the facts of the situation.

Early in the planning stages for CUC2008, we surveyed a number of high-level players from across the country about CUC in general. When the question was asked about field food, the response from most players was that the food provided was sub-par, and that supply and variety was not sufficient. When asked about having only vendors, people just wanted to be informed that it was a paid-for service and they would in-fact rather not have to leave the fields for ‘real’ food.

We decided from this feedback that we could make an athlete’s experience better by focusing on things such as quality of fields, availability of buses, etc. and leaving the food service to professionals.

Facts about field food:

Good food service is best left to professionals.
We are providing free Tim Horton’s coffee, bananas, oranges, and granola bars in the morning. Those who are staying at Blackfoot Inn are also entitled to complimentary continental breakfast, check with the hotel for more details.
Due to the size of our event, we are under heavy scrutiny from the Calgary Health Region, they will not allow us to serve any unpackaged food, or fruit that cannot be peeled.
We’ve selected vendors who will provide quality and healthy foods that work best for athletes.
Food items will be priced in a range from $3-$8, cheaper than your average concession stand.
CUC2008 is not taking any percentage of sales from the vendors.
The closest restaurant from any of our fields is at least a 30 minute+ round trip. With vendors you will be able to get good food without leaving the fields.
Facts about CUC:

While the players fees cover a portion of the costs of running the event, they don’t even come close to covering all of it.
CUC2008 is currently breaking even with the generous support of sponsors and the City of Calgary.
Not one of the volunteers associated with CUC is taking an honorarium or any form of payment from the revenues of CUC2008. We are spending all of the money on you, the athletes.
A lot of people have put in a lot of volunteer hours to this tournament. We’re doing this for the love of the sport, not because we want to profit off the backs of Canada’s best Ultimate players. We’ve had to make a lot of decisions, and I stand by the decisions made by our committees. Some people are afraid of change, we hope you’ll see this change as innovative and embrace it with an open mind.

If you have any questions about the field food situation for CUC2008, please don’t hesitate to contact me at info@calgary2008.com.

Thanks for your time,

-d
